"The Suffering Machine"

Texting, Episode 11: Picasso's "The Weeping Woman"

Happy Monday, textual deviants!

This week I called an audible, and instead of choosing one of the drug-related texts I teased last week, I opted at the last minute for one of the most iconic paintings of the twentieth century: The Weeping Woman by Pablo Picasso. During the first half of the podcast, Tomek and I attempt to engage with this cubist masterpiece as a purely visual object. During the second half, we allow ourselves to consider biographical and historical details relevant to the work before making some rather idiosyncratic personal and intertextual connections. We hope our discussion deepens your appreciation, as it did ours, of Picasso’s depiction of “the suffering machine.”

Tune in next week when our textual focus will be, of all things, a tweet.
