What’s the elephant in the room?
On this episode of Texting, Tomek and I take as our text the smartphone—that little screen in your pocket from which you may very well be reading this post. After a brief history of mobile phones and a consideration of the significance of the smartphone in relation to other inventions, my co-host and I reflect on a series of philosophical questions. Are we, as I contend, too dumb to have smartphones? Is it true, as George Carlin suggests, that we have ceased to think critically because “everybody has got a cell phone that’ll make pancakes and rub their balls”? Are we all complicit in the enslavement of cobalt miners in the Congo? Am I addicted to my iPhone X?
