"Proto-Podcasting in the 16th Century"

S2E11: Michel de Montaigne's "To the Reader"

Portrait of Michel de Montaigne, circa unknown.jpg

To the Textual Deviant

This, here, is an honest podcast. I warn you straightaway that Tomek and I meant for it to be an informal discussion, and never once considered your interest or our reputation. We do not have the strength for such a design. We recorded it for our relatives and our friends so that once we are gone (which may be soon) they may find in it again remnants of our personalities and thoughts, and remember us in a more complete and lifelike way. Had we been seeking public attention, we would have made ourselves look better and presented ourselves more carefully. But we want you to see us as we are, in a plain, natural, and ordinary way, free of pretense and artifice. We are the ones depicted here. Our faults and our very selves are exposed for all to see, at least as much as public conventions will allow us. Had we lived among those nations which (they say) still live under the sweet liberty of nature’s primitive laws, we assure you we would easily have painted ourselves quite fully and quite naked. So, textual deviant, here we are, the subjects of this podcast, and we see no reason why you should spend your free time on so unimportant and pointless a topic. Farewell, then! From Taipei, April 3rd, 2023.
