Hello again, textual deviants!
In this week’s episode of Texting, Tomek and I discuss the song “Jóga” by the Icelandic singer-songwriter Björk. After briefly commenting on Björk’s early history with the band the Sugarcubes, we consider her work in relation to that of other musical artists such as Radiohead, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Madonna, and the Beatles. Despite occasional interruptions caused by my dogs QQ and Momo barking in the background, we attempt to situate Björk within the context of Scandinavian, Nordic, and specifically Icelandic culture and mythology. We also speculate on the meaning of the phrase “submarine passion,” which Björk has said is characteristic of the Arctic in contrast to the Mediterranean. Let us know what you think of our chat in the comments below!
Tune in next week for episode 5, when our text will be George Carlin’s last comedy special It’s Bad For Ya!
